Austria-Hungary - Under Construction
Austro-Hungarian Empire: 1867 - 1918
The Austro-Hungarian Empire, also known as the Dual Monarchy, was a union of the Kingdom of Hungary, and the Empire of Austria, and had come about thanks to the compromise of 1867, which created the dualistic state, and cememted Hungarian power alongside that of the traditional Austria power.
The Empire covered a vast multitude of distinct ethnic groups, and this would later sow the seeds of the Empires downfall. Economic prosperity was mainly limited to the Austrian and Hungarian lands, which ruled the Empire, though the Empire's economy was always considered somewhat "backwards" compared to other leading European states.
Austria-Hungary's ethnic problems also related to her foreign policy problems as well. With Serbia to the south seeking to expand its own power, and create a greater pan-slavic state in the Balkans, along with other ethnic groups slowly growing their own nationalistic intentions, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was rife with ethnic unrest.
The start of the Great War spelled the end for Austria-Hungary. With its armies taking heavy losses and fighting a war on three fronts, combined with economic difficulties and growing ethnic unrest, the Empire collapsed and was dismembered in November 1918 as the Allies followed through with Woodrow Wilson's 14 points.
